Castle Rock Man Shoots Wife Who He Thought Was Home Invader

A Castle Rock couple is at the center of attention for all the wrong reasons following a near-fatal accident caused by a husband who acted a little too quickly with his firearm before learning what was really going on around him.
The incident that spurred on this near-tragedy occurred on Friday night, July 27th at about 10:00 in the evening at a home in the 600 block of Howe Street in Castle Rock. It happened when the husband in question heard someone entering he and his wife’s home, and since his wife was not around, the husband’s mind went into home defense mode.
What he didn’t know was that the person entering the home was, in fact, his wife just coming back to him. It is unknown at this point if the husband knew whether or not the wife was coming home that evening or if this was her popping in at a random moment, but considering his reaction it seems that he did not know she was coming home.
What was his reaction, you ask? Well according to neighbor’s eyewitness accounts, the husband fired several shots as the wife came home. Neighbor Debbie Rossiter explains…
““There were seven. Two of them were double shots like ‘bah-bam!’ So I lay there for a while thinking, is that really what I heard? I didn’t want to get up.”
Police then stated that of the several rounds fired, one actually hit the man’s wife. She was taken to a local hospital where she will recover well from her injury according to authorities.
As for the husband, it appears that at least in the eyes of the law there was nothing sinister behind the husband’s reaction as at the time of writing this article the man had not been charged nor arrested for his actions, however, the investigation is still ongoing at this time.
Now, all of that said, this does not mean that just because the man did not go to jail that he did nothing wrong. There is a difference between defending yourself and your home and being overzealous and downright dangerous with your defense plan. There are plenty of steps that can be taken before jumping to neutralize a threat.
First and foremost would be figuring out what is a threat. It seems obvious that the husband in this story didn’t know that the person entering his home was his wife, so at the very least attempt to verify what is going on in a situation before firing blindly. That’s an easy way to avoid a tragedy.
But I’ll leave the rest to you all. What other mistakes did this man make? Let us know your thoughts on the situation in the comments below.
