Colorado Springs, Colorado – One man is dead after targeting the wrong person to rob in a Carl’s Jr. drive through.
The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), say one of their officers was sitting in their car waiting to get dinner at around 3:30 a.m. after working the graveyard shift on Thursday morning when they were approached by a man.
The suspect opened the car door and climbed in saying he had a gun and demanded valuables.
CSPD spokesperson Sgt. Jason Newton told 11 News:
“An off-duty officer was getting food. They just got off shift, and then a male approached them and said he had a handgun. The off-duty officer fired the weapon at least one time, striking the male at least one time. The officer is uninjured at this time. The male is deceased.”
Officers arrived at the scene right away since units were already at a nearby Loaf N’ Jug gas station in response to a robbery that had occurred there around the same time.
Detectives are working to uncover if the suspect who threatened the officer is also responsible for the Loaf N’ Jug robbery, and another robbery that happened nearby but a few hours earlier.
There has been no clarification yet if the officer was still in uniform at the time of the attempted robbery, but CSPD did say the officer was not in a marked police vehicle at the time.
“The Colorado Springs Police Department, we were investigating a robbery at the gas station, and the call actually came in as a shooting,” Newton said.
Following standard procedure, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office working the investigation into the shooting involving the CSPD officer.
“Colorado Springs Police Department is still investigating the original robbery at the gas station… The shooting will be handed over to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, and they will investigate that,” Newton said.
